Reading and Literacy Specialist, Elementary School

The Reading and Literacy Specialist will be working with students in the early elementary grades who are experiencing difficulty in acquiring reading and writing skills. Using assessment tools and various models of intervention, the specialist will work with students in small groups and individually. The specialist will also work with classroom teachers to help them integrate strategies that support the growth of literacy skills into their instruction.

The candidate should have the following qualifications:

  • Masters degree or beyond in Special Education, Language and Literacy, and/or Reading
  • Knowledge and experience in language and reading development as well as intervention strategies for early elementary school grades
  • Proficiency in reading assessment and ability to use assessment results in order to determine appropriate interventions
  • Ability to provide teachers with materials and strategies to support a range of students in their literacy development
  • Ability to take initiative, communicate effectively with parents and colleagues and work collaboratively in educational teams

Director of Institutional Advancement

The newly created Director of Institutional Advancement will spearhead Maimonides School’s institutional advancement program—a unified, professional, strategic approach to our overall fundraising goals. This person will work to combine annual and capital giving with the introduction of planned giving, corporate and foundation relations, and creative use of the newest technologies to take our fundraising to the next level.

Our Annual Campaign, which currently raises on the order of $1.5 million each year, consists of a gala dinner event and adbook campaign. This effort needs to continue to grow while at the same time be integrated with major gifts, funding for special projects, and an initiative to rebuild our endowment. This is an excellent opportunity to build a complete development program for one of the region’s most prestigious Jewish day schools.

The Director of Institutional Advancement will be a member of Maimonides School’s senior administrative team reporting to the Executive Director. He/she will have the support of a dedicated Board of Directors, a small professional and administrative Development staff, lay leaders, and volunteer fundraisers rooted in a committed and involved parent community. He/she will directly supervise one Development professional.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design and manage a program to attract the maximum possible support to the School, including an annual campaign; endowment campaign; major gifts; planned giving; special events; and institutional support.
  • Devise, implement, and measure effective strategies to increase alumni, parent, and grandparent support of (and involvement in) Maimonides School—including current families and a pool of some 1,500 graduates who have yet to be cultivated and solicited in any systematic way.
  • Research, strategize, and develop action plans for soliciting key prospects, working together with the Board of Directors and its Institutional Advancement Committee to ensure maximum fundraising effectiveness.
  • Collaborate with the Institutional Advancement Committee, and keep the committee and the School administrative team apprised of the activities of the Development Office.
  • "Make the asks" on his/her own; train lay leaders to conduct appropriate cultivation and solicitation calls on their own, and/or accompany them as needed.
  • Utilize (and, where needed, improve on) existing solutions to ensure timely gift acknowledgement, prompt and accurate processing of all gift income, and an up-to-date donor database in Senior Systems.
  • Provide outstanding customer service to all prospects and donors.
  • Attend various cultivation and stewardship events.
  • Be an effective spokesperson and advocate for Maimonides School, as well as for day-school education in general.
  • Write proposals for foundation and corporate support.
  • Mentor, train and retain a professional and administrative staff to carry out the work and activities of the Development Office.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • At least seven years of solid Development experience. Experience in Jewish communal work is preferred.
  • Demonstrated success soliciting and closing major gifts.
  • A successful track record of running an annual campaign.
  • Appreciation and understanding of Maimonides School's mission, paired with the ability to communicate it in an effective and inspiring manner. Familiarity with modern Orthodox Judaism is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to build and maintain productive long-term relationships with major donors, Board members, parents, faculty, and administrators.
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a fast-paced organization emphasizing teamwork, respect, and excellence.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, tailoring the "voice" to a range of audiences.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills and an attention to detail.
  • Creative visionary force with the ability to fashion and implement a comprehensive fundraising program.
  • An understanding of the Boston Jewish philanthropic community.
  • Self-confidence, high-energy, a "can-do" personality and a passion to do whatever needs to be done to accomplish established goals.
  • Literate, professional demeanor coupled with a warm, down-to-earth personality. Sense of humor is preferred.

Arabic Teacher, Middle & Upper School

Maimonides School seeks a .4FTE teacher of Arabic. For the 2010-11 school year, this position will cover one section of 8th and one of 9th graders, with plan to build our Arabic program in subsequent grades. Schedule: Monday 3-5 pm; Wednesday 2-5 pm; Thursday 3:55-4:40 pm, Friday 12:30-1:05 pm. Some teaching experience is required.
