The Ezra Schwartz Memorial Baseball Tournament, established in memory of Maimonides graduate Ezra Schwartz '15, will be April 19-22, 2018.
Ezra grew up in Sharon, Massachusetts, with his parents and 4 siblings. In September 2015, Ezra went to Israel for his gap year between high school and college. On November 19, 2015, he was killed by a Palestinian terrorist in a drive-by shooting on his way to a nature preserve near the Gush Etzion Junction. Ezra was on his way to do volunteer work in memory of three boys, Gil-ad, Naftali, and Eyal, who were kidnapped and killed in June of 2014. Ezra was 18 years old.
In spring 2017, his family held the Inaugural Ezra Schwartz Memorial Baseball Tournament in Ezra's hometown of Sharon. According to his mother Ruth, the main goal for creating the tournament was to share Ezra’s spirit and love for baseball.
"By sponsoring a baseball tournament weekend we want to honor Ezra’s passion for baseball and create a fun environment to remember him," said Ruth. "The Sharon community is greatly looking forward to welcoming the Maimonides Varsity Baseball players and the baseball teams from Flatbush, Frisch and YULA High Schools to participate in our Ezra Schwartz Memorial Baseball Tournament weekend."
